Ramona Joy Woodchuck: Sentinel of the Dock | Champion Gunwale Bobber | Firestarter of the Soul
At the very end of the dock, where the lake drinks in the last drops of dusk, Ramona Joy Woodchuck sits. She is the self-appointed—and universally accepted—sentinel of this weathered pier, which juts bravely into the inky stillness like a promise. With marshmallow skewer wetted and loaded, Ramona, a fixture of twilight, pauses after another day of adventure.
Every waning crescent moon, without fail, she performs a little ritual known to precisely no one but her. She’ll strike a match, ignite a flame, and roast a marshmallow until it’s ablaze — and crispy pitch black, like the sky above. Then she’ll blow it out, peel off the char, and eat it with reverence before starting again. This is not dessert. This is doctrine.
To Ramona, that tiny blaze matters. It’s a reminder that even when the moon is just a whisper in the sky, when no one brings you the light, you can make your own. Spark something. Create (or be!) your own electric fireball. You’re never stuck—not when you’ve got kindling, a bit of grit, and the wild inside you.
Ramona Joy is in awe of all things untamed — ferns that crack stone, fog that arrives like a secret, loons who cry just to hear their own voice echo. And though she rarely speaks of it, she once told a young chipmunk who was bored stiff one summer afternoon: “If you’re bored, you’re simply not looking close enough. The world’s full of embers. You just need to light ‘em up.”
